Tech Talk (Vol 5)

Intelsat Galaxy 15 On April 5, 2010, Intelsat announced that Galaxy 15 (a $250 million orbiting TV transmitter) ceased to respond to commands sent to it by ground control. Without the commands issued by ground control, the satellite began to drift from it's orbit. What makes this situation unique is that it's transponders (transmitters) continue to operate with no ability from the ground to shut them off. Researchers believe a solar activity from the sun knocked out it's communications and guidance electronics. As Galaxy 15 travels around the Earth, it has been wandering near other, working satellites. The broadcast companies have been scrambling to move their transmission to other working satellites that are not in the path of Galaxy 15. When Galaxy 15 passes near another, the transmissions get mixed up and interupts the single of the good, working satellite. The result, television customers will see random pixalizing. On August 15th, Galaxy 15 will be passing near the satellite of ESPN and Disney. Intelsat has created a web site with up-to-date information at Galaxy 15 Operational Status. Like the BP Gulf Oil mess, they've got a problem, they have no true solution, and they are trying everything they can think of to stop it.

Common Questions asked:
Q. My PC is locked up and won't do anything. What do I do?
A. If you PC is locked up and not responding, hold down the power button and count to four slowly. Your PC should power off. After it has shut down, hit the power and restart it. If this happens frequently, you have a problem. Overheating (fan quit), bad memory, virus/trojan infection, and hard drive failure as just a few of the possible causes.
Q. I just got a new PC, how do I set it up to work on MINTEL?
A. Our nework is set up so that you should be able to hook your new PC up, plug in the ethernet (network) cable, and turn it on. It should just work. Other than setting up your email program and your Home Page (start page when Internet Explorer opens) their shouldn't be anything else to do.
Q. I am getting an error and it says to contact my System Administrator. Who is that?
A. That would be the person that works on your PC. Most of the time it is you.
Q. I forgot my Facebook password (or Hotmail, Google, Yahoo, Pogo etc).
A. You would need to contact them directly. We do not have that information. Most websites that require a password have instructions to follow if you forgot your password.
Q. I can't get on then Internet and my PC says 'Network Cable Unplugged". What is that?
A. This is a common error after every thunderstorm. Normally it means the ethernet cable is not plugged in all the way. Usually after a storm it is a result of a voltage spike that has knocked out your ethernet card on you PC. You can purchase another for less than $20 and follow the instructions to install it. It takes a small amount of skill but most can do it easily.
